A Blast to the Past

Some days it seems like the golden age of gaming is over. New releases with Hollywood level effects just don't seem to do the same thing for you as your first frag in Doom. Graphics are a dime a dozen now of days. Sure, those reflections and psychedelic shaders add to the gaming experience -- if you just dropped acid.

Well, fear not, because help is on the way. Remember those games your daddy wouldn't let you buy when you were a kid -- Leisure Suit Larry ring a bell? (Or maybe your dad did buy them for you and you became the biggest player in high school.) Want to relive the moments of spraying gibs halfway across the gothic cathedral in Quake? Don't loose hope, far from being dead, retrofragging (or retroshagging in the case of Larry) is alive and very well

Thanks to many factors there has never been a better time to been a gamer. The blazing fast $4000 machines of yesterday can be found for pennies on the dollar -- and they'll run all the oldies with no problem. The bargain bins and aisles of ebay and littered with classics. The openness of studios like iD have allowed new life to be breathed on titles such as Doom and Quake. Not satisfied? You like the flashy graphics? Have no fear, there are many attempts to transform the pixelated realities of yesterday into the smooth realism of the modern 3D card.

The sad demise of some of the best developers have left the copyrights of the ancients in question. Rather than die in an unmarked games these games are being rediscovered daily thanks to sites like the Underdogs.

All the time while the latest MMORPG steals the headlines, MUDs provide endless opportunities looking for college students to fail.

Whether your looking for a quick LAN frag or an in-depth gaming experience, these games have something to offer you.
